FAQ

Why install a wood deck with hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners?
There are three reasons for using hardWood Clip™ fasteners: beauty, safety and practicality. In terms of beauty, the lack of visible screws, even spacing between boards, lack of board deterioration and warping gives wood decks a high-end look with built-in safety features. The design of the fasteners, materials used and installation method ensure that these features withstand the test of time, regardless of climate. hardWood Clip™ is also the only fastening system with a stainless steel insert moulded inside, which further enhances its mechanical resistance. In practical terms, hardWood Clip™ fasteners and SPAX® screws are quick and easy to install. They can save 30% to 40% (of non-structural) deck construction time and don't require any specific tools.
How long have hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners been around?
The hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system has been on the market for more than 10 years. It was developed and tested by wood professionals and deck installers in the United States and Europe. Extensive testing with the majority of deck wood varieties and species (ipe, cumaru, bankirai, padouk, garapa, acacia, heat-treated wood, etc.) in actual settings and in every type of climate with a broad range of temperatures have proven its efficiency and quality over time when installed and used as recommended. Tens of millions of fasteners have already be sold and installed around the world.
Can hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners be used with any type of wood?
The hardWood Clip™ fastening system can be used with most deck wood varieties and species (ipe, cumaru, bankirai, padouk, garapa, acacia, heat-treated wood, etc.) and for high-quality composites as well. Avoid using poor quality materials with high expansion and contraction rates.
Is it absolutely necessary to pre-groove the wood boards to install hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners?
hardWood Clip™ fasteners can also be installed with boards that have no grooves or that are pre-grooved along the full length of the boards. If your boards have no grooves, simply cut the grooves on site when installing the boards on each joist using a groove cutter (Lamello® type) and following the instructions supplied with the system. Pre-grooving is often the method of choice, because it saves time.
How do you cut the groove on the edge of wood boards?
Grooves can be cut during installation using a simple groove cutter (Lamello® type) and following the instructions supplied with the system. In this case, grooves will be cut on site at each joist. Another option is to have the boards pre-grooved in a woodshop or directly by the wood seller. Some specialty wood stores also sell boards that have been pre-grooved along the full length of both edges.
What is the recommended spacing between wood deck boards?
Wood deck board spacing depends on the moisture content of the wood and the humidity of the environment where it will be installed. If wood boards have been air-dried (AD) and installed in a dry climate (they will contract after installation), then we recommend using the Extreme™ or Standard hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners, which will space the boards 2.4 mm apart with the integrated spacer tab. For automatic spacing, simply push each board to be installed against the base of the fasteners already screwed into the previous board. However, if wood boards have been kiln-dried (KD) and installed in a humid climate (they will swell and expand after installation), then we recommend using the ExtremeKD™ hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners, which will automatically space boards 6.4 mm apart with the integrated spacer tab.
With which board sizes can hardWood Clip™ fasteners be used?
Unlike many existing products on the market (and particularly because of the easy-to-cut groove profile) hardWood Clip™ fasteners are sold separately from wood boards. They can be used on boards of all lengths and thicknesses up to 180 mm in width. In addition to providing great flexibility and freedom, the system also helps reduce off-cuts during installation. That means you can focus on the esthetics and, for example, use different board widths for your project.
Does the hardWood Clip™ fastening system come with screws?
The hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system comes with SPAX® self-tapping screws made of A2 stainless steel and adapted for use with the hardest of woods.
There is no need for pre-drilling, because the CUT point separates wood fibres while ground serrations on the shank advance the screw with no wood splintering, even when very close to the edge of boards. The MULTI head has ridges which mill and brake at the same time. They prevent it from twisting, especially when they reach the stainless steel inserts in the hardwood Clip™ fasteners.
When combined with SPAX® screws, hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners are an outstanding, high-quality, easy-to-use product guaranteed not to damage wood and fasteners.
Can the screws pierce the hardWood Clip™ fasteners?
The stainless steel insert inside the moulded hardWood Clip™ fastener, combined with the size of the SPAX® screw head and the braking ridges prevent it from piercing the fastener or twisting when it abuts on the insert. It is, however, important to always adjust the torque of the electric screwdriver properly.
How do you attach the first wood board of the deck?
The first wood board must be installed with screws that will attach it directly to the joist. Plugs delivered with the system hide the screw heads.
Why do you have to install hardWood Clip™ fasteners at a 45° angle?
Screwing down hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners at a 45° angle firmly attaches one side of the board to the joist and stabilizes the deck. Most other fasteners on the market do not screw the boards to the joists, which often leads to irreversible board drifting. Screwing down the boards at a 45° angle also hides the screw head under the groove.
How many hidden hardWood Clip™ fasteners do you need per m2 to build a wood deck?
We recommend installing a hardWood Clip™ fastener to each deck joist, approximately every 45 to 50 cm. If the deck is built with 100-mm wide boards, you will need approximately 30 fasteners per m2. However, if the deck is built with 140-mm wide boards, you will need approximately 21 fasteners per m2. The length of boards used will also affect the number of fasteners needed. The shorter the boards, the more fasteners you need, because we recommend installing two fasteners where boards abut (one on the side where one board ends and the other where the two abutting boards meet). Use the calculator to obtain the approximate number of fasteners required based on the wood deck surface, board width and spacing between joists.
Is the hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system quicker and easier to install than other fastening systems?
The hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system is quicker and easier to install than most other fastening systems on the market. It is also quicker and easier than a traditional wood system with visible screws and possibly some plugs. The hardWood Clip™ fastening system considerably reduces deck construction time (by 30% to 40%) due to : screwing down at a 45° angle through the board and joist, exclusive SPAX® self-tapping screws that eliminates the need for pre-drilling, integrated spacer that automatically positions boards the same distance apart, no screw alignment required and simple groove profile that can be cut on site with a groove cutter or in a workshop along the full length of the board.
Can boards be replaced?
Boards attached with hardWood Clip™ fasteners can easily be replaced, if necessary.
How do you install a bowed board with the hardWood Clip™ system?
The design principle behind the hardWood Clip™ system allows you to install and attach a bowed board. Simply position one end of the board properly and attach it to the joist by screwing it down at a 45° angle. Then, using a pry bar or Hardwood Wrench® bring the board up against the spacer tab of the second fastener and screw it down. Continue the same way along the full length of the bowed board.
Are hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners UV-resistant?
All hardWood Clip™ fasteners are 100% UV-resistant.
Can hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners be used in all climates?
hardWood Clip™ fasteners and SPAX® screws are manufactured with very high quality materials. They are designed to be resistant and used in every type of climate: extreme cold, high heat, humid climates or sea and salt air.
Can air circulate freely through the deck with the hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system?
The hardWood Clip™ system provides guaranteed air circulation between wood deck boards at all times. The spacers integrated into fasteners prevent boards from touching each other when they swell so air can circulate under the deck. Maintaining air circulation is essential to the stability and longevity of the deck. To prevent wood warping or mould, water that drains off the deck boards needs to evaporate quickly.
Are hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners guaranteed?
hardWood Clip™ fasteners are guaranteed for 100 years when used and installed as recommended.
When should hardWood Clip™ Standard and Extreme hidden fasteners be used?
hardWood Clip™ Standard and Extreme™ fasteners are primarily used with air-dried (AD) wood and in dry climates (ambient humidity lower than wood moisture content when installed).
When should hardWood Clip™ ExtremeKD™ hidden fasteners be used?
hardWood Clip™ ExtremeKD™ are primarily used with kiln-dried (KD) wood and in humid climates (ambient humidity higher than wood moisture content when installed).
Does the hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system require you to work on top of the structure when attaching boards?
hardWood Clip™ hidden fasteners are installed from above, just like in a traditional installation with visible screws. The system can be used regardless of the space available under the structure.
What is the hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system made of?
The hardWood Clip™ system comes in a kit for installing a wood deck of 10 to 12 m2 (140 mm-wide boards with joists every 45 or 50 cm). Each kit contains 185 hardWood Clip™ fasteners, 200 SPAX® screws in A2 stainless steel, a Torx driver bit and 12 Ipe plugs. hardWood Clip™ ExtremeKD™ kits also include three hard spacers.
What are the spacers for that come with the hardWood Clip™ ExtremeKD fasteners?
hardWood Clip™ ExtremeKD™ fasteners are made of polyethylene, which has mechanical properties that make it highly resistant yet flexible, which is essential for adapting to changes in boards when they expand. To avoid crushing the fastener spacer when positioning boards against it and thereby eliminating its benefits, we recommend using hard spacers to ensure that spacing is even and to protect the shape of the fastener base during installing.
Is the hardWood Clip™ hidden fastening system more expensive than other systems or the traditional installation method with visible screws?
Structural costs aside, the cost of hardWood Clip™ fastening systems is similar to that of a traditional installation of equivalent quality with visible screws. However, it is far more economical in terms of labour costs, because installation time is reduced by 30% to 40%.
What about the durability and longevity of wood alternatives like the composites that are increasingly common on the market?
Composites manufacturers praise the durability and reliability of their products in comparison to wood. Sometimes they’re right. Although wood is versatile, it’s not always the best choice for every application. Nevertheless, some caution may be in order regarding claims made about alternative products. Unlike wood, these products are relatively new and there is not enough relevant data available to anticipate how they will stand up over time.
